What the limits are, and why they differ

Every platform caps the bio field at a different length, and none of them explain why. The practical effect is the same one bio rarely fits everywhere without a trim: what reads naturally at 220 characters on LinkedIn gets cut in half on TikTok, and Instagram and Threads share the same 150-character cap since a Threads profile is just its linked Instagram account.

Counting by character, not by string length

This counter uses grapheme clusters (what a person would call one "character") rather than raw string length, so an emoji, a flag, or an accented letter typically counts as one character the way it visually reads as one — not two or three. Platforms don't all count identically either: some weight an emoji as two characters internally even though it displays as one. Treat every count here as a close, honest guide, not a guaranteed match to what a given platform will show you.

What to actually put in a short bio

With this little space, every character has to earn its place. Lead with who you are or what you make, skip the filler ('welcome to my page!'), and save the actual destination for your one link rather than trying to describe it in the bio text itself.

Line breaks and spacing

Every line break counts as a character too, on every platform this counter checks — a bio broken into three short lines costs a few more characters than the same words run together, and this tool counts that cost exactly the way the field itself will. A blank line between two lines of text costs two line breaks, not one, so budget for it if a platform is already close to its limit.
